Rexford E. Wright 94, longtime resident of Williamstown, NY passed away peacefully on Sunday July 31, 2016 in the company of family and friends in a place that he loved, La Manzanilla, Mexico.

He was born in Addison, NY, on December 26, 1921, son of Morris & Elenah Manley Wright. He graduated from Liverpool High School and attended St. Lawrence University before volunteering for the US Army, where he served in the ‘Signal Corps’ from 1942-1945.  After the war, he married Lilly M. Lindberg, an Army Nurse, and they had 5 children.

Rex worked for General Electric Co. as a radar technician, before retiring in 1987, following nearly 20 years of service in Turkey.  He enjoyed swimming while in Turkey, doing laps in the freezing cold water of the pool there every day.  He remained active after retirement and began bicycling, participating in local bicycle races including the “Tour de Tug” with son Peter and Mark.  He became a member of the “Century Club” at age 69 by bicycling over 100 miles in one day, an accomplishment for a cyclist of any age!  He maintained his interest in the “ham radio” and was a member of the ARRI. (American Radio Relay League)  His call sign, W2QAY, was known to members, world and country wide.  He was a member of the Hasting-Gorski American Legion and VFW Post 1128.  He could often be found having a beer at the Legion, which he called “the club”, accompanied by “mae-mae” who went along for the popcorn.  He enjoyed limburger cheese, a sunny day, wall-to-wall blue sky, musician Fats Waller, and the poet Ogden Nash.

Rex was predeceased by his wife Lilly, a son, Rexford Wright II, twin sister, Alice, and a grandson, Christopher K. Wright.  He is survived by 2 daughters:  Victoria and Hollis, 3 sons:  Peter, David, and Mark, 10 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.  He will also be missed by Lora Loka, of whose large informally adopted Mexican family he was a member.

A Memorial Service for Rexford Wright will be held at his church, Trinity Episcopal, Camden, at 12 noon on Sunday, October 23, followed by interment with Military Honors at Fairview Cemetery, Williamstown, under the direction of the LaRobardiere Funeral Home, Inc., 109 Main Street Camden, NY.  A gathering of family and friends will follow, held at the Hastings-Gorski American Legion, Williamstown.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made (via the family) which will be used to help fund the Angie Ortiz Healthcare Education Fund, LaManzanilla, Mexico.
