We wanted to let everyone know that our father, Dr. Robert W. Hugel, passed away peacefully on April 6th, at his daughter's home in Mill Valley, CA. All six of his children Ulrich, Anna, Helene, William, Robert, Kate and his granddaughter Jamila were fortunate to be with him during his last few days. He was eighty-seven years old.

Graveside services are open to the public, and will be held in Maple Flats Cemetery in Cleveland, NY, at 11am on Saturday April 13th, which would have been his 88th birthday.

Robert Wilhelm Hugel was born in Chemnitz, Germany on April 13th, 1931. He studied medicine in Heidelberg, Germany, followed by an internship at Stamford Hospital, Connecticut, a Residency in Psychiatry at The University of Vermont, and specialty training in Adolescent Psychiatry, McGill University, Montreal. In 1969 he moved to Cleveland, NY and became Clinical Assistant Professor at SUNY Upstate Medical Center and Commissioner for the Oneida County Department of Mental Health. He went on to practice Psychiatry as a private practitioner at Benjamin Rush Center, and eventually became Director of Psychiatry at St. Joseph's Hospital.

In Montreal he met Alison Jockel, and together they purchased the abandoned remains of the Stone Barn Castle in Cleveland, NY, where the two were married in 1969. Over the next thirty years he and Alison rebuilt the Stone Barn Castle, doing the vast majority of the work themselves, transforming the place into a thriving tourist attraction. He had a great love of sailing, and spent most of his life after retirement on his boat.

He is survived by his children Ulrich Hugel and wife Peggy, Anna Spevak and husband Walt, Helene Hugel and husband Justin, William Hugel and wife Lara, Robert Hugel and wife Azucena, Katrina Hugel and partner Phil, his grandchildren Jamila Keba, David Hugel, Lily Lynch, Saoirse Lynch, and his beloved dog Max.

     He will be dearly missed.
