Alex J. Scales 91 of Camden, NY, formerly of Rome, NY passed away Thursday May 7, 2020 at Rome Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility after complications of Covid-19. He was born in Camden, NY on May 18, 1928 a son of Alex & Ida Russell Scales. Alex served with the U.S. Army from 1945-1948 and had served with the 793rd Police Battalion Company A in Nurnberg, Germany. On June 23, 1951 he married the former Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Armstrong in St. Mary’s Church, Rome, NY. she passed away October 31, 2015. They had lived in Rome, NY for 32 years before moving to Camden in the early 1980’s and lived in Sylvan Beach since 1997 before returning to Camden, NY. Alex was a lifetime member of Lt. Victor Giles V.F.W. Post, member Arthur S. Moran American Legion Post # 66, former member Sylvan Beach American Legion, CSEA, AARP, former member St. John’s Church, North Bay, NY.
Surviving are three daughters, Jesse-Len & Randy Rouse, West Winfield, NY, Jennifer & Keith Kanclerz, Forestport, NY, Jerilyn & Thomas Pugh, Rome, NY, four sons, Roger & Kathleen Scales, Dunedin, FL, Richard & Rena Scales, Camden, NY, Randal & Rebecca Scales, Vienna, NY and Ron & Karen Scales, Camden, NY, 25 grandchildren; Benjamin Scales, Jason & Jennifer Sestito Snyder, Stephanie & Michael Flood, Justin Snyder, Allison & David Zakala, Amy Lynn Scales, Jessica & Tom Henry, Amy Louise & Eric Bower, Alison, Katerina, Anna Maria and Elia Cipriano, Casandra & Randall Loomis, Shane Scales and Cheryl Abbott, Clarence Alex Farrier and Doug Jones, Justin Farrier, Elizabeth & Jason Tallman, Nicole Helmer, Travis Helmer, Trevor Wiggins, Robert Scales, Ryan & Tiffany Scales, Kelly & Howard Love and Tiana and Imani Pugh, 25 great grandchildren along with several nieces & nephews. Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by two grandsons, Bradley Scales and Gary Vaughn, five sisters, Lorna Burt, Charlotte Hinds, Shirley Van Pelt, June ‘Rita’ Ruscher, Evelyn English and two brothers, Roger and Wayne Scales. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Third Floor Residential staff and the ICU staff at Rome Memorial Hospital with a very special thank you and a big hug to nurses, Piper and Rachael for the care given to their dad and grandfather, Alex Scales.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions funeral services under the direction of LaRobardiere Funeral Home, Inc., Camden, NY will be private. Interment St. John’s Cemetery, Camden, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Forest Park, Camden, NY in lieu of flowers.

We are so sorry for your loss. What a wonderful tribute to your dad. I remember your mom and dad playing cards with my mom when they would come to stay with Kathleen and Roger. Love to all of you

So sorry for your loss. Whenever we would see him out he always had a smile and always remembered our names. He had many nieces and nephews to remember. I remember the card parties and the yelling and laughing. I remember them riding around town on there mopeds. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I am so sorry for your loss. Al and Betty were one of a kind. I have many fond memories of chatting with them at the New England Style store. He was so proud of his family. A different story every day and then he learned I was from Redfield and he had stories of times spent there.
