Diane Charlotte Fanning Hayes, 65, of Camden, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 20, 2020, at Rome Memorial Hospital after being stricken at home.

She was born on July 1, 1955, in Rome, the daughter of Donald and Carol Stephenson Fanning.  As a child, she attended Camden Elementary School and Camden Central Junior and Senior High School, graduating in 1973.

She attended Camden United Methodist Church in her youth.

After graduation, she began working at the Black Lantern Restaurant in Camden as a short-order cook.  Her mother worked with her as a waitress.  Diane was an excellent cook. She inherited her mother’s cooking talents and helped to make holiday meals very special.  Then she went to work at Harden Furniture for forty-three years in the upholstery and rubbing departments.  She retired in 2016.

On July 16, 1993, Diane married Michael L. Hayes at their home on Florence Hill Rd.  She and Mike had a wonderful marriage together.  They enjoyed going to garage sales and hosting sales at their home.  Together, they had many nice trips, especially enjoying New Orleans.  They purchased the summer home of Lester and Bette Quinn called “Idle Acres” to enjoy in their retirement.  They only had a few years to enjoy their property, but the time they had there was enjoyed by them and their family and friends.

Diane was predeceased by her husband on October 1, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was also predeceased by her parents, her brother, Tim, her brother-in-law, Danny “Jovial” Hayes, and her sister-in-law, Laurie Hayes Britton.

Surviving are her stepson, Senator (Meaghan) Hayes; her step-grandsons, Mason and Lawson; her two sisters, Donna (James) Christmas, and Susan Fanning; her brother, Tom Fanning; her three sisters-in-law, Judi Hayes, Sharon Comstock, and Carol Hayes; a brother-in-law, Jim Britton; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.  Interment will take place in Fish Creek Landing Cemetery in the spring.  The family will hold a celebration of life at a future date.  There are no public calling hours.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the LaRobardiere Funeral Home, Inc., 109 Main St., Camden.  Memorial contributions may be made in Diane’s memory to the Michael L. Hayes Memorial Scholarship, c/o Community Bank, Main St., Camden, NY, 13316, the Abraham House, 417 N. Washington St., Rome, NY, 13440, or the Camden Ambulance Service, PO Box 222, Camden, NY, 13316.  You may view obituary and send a message of condolence online at www.larobardierefuneralhome.com.

I underestimated Diane's strength and determination. I never thought she would stay in her and Mike's marital home after he passed, but she did. It was not the easy thing to do, but she did it because it was their home together. I will miss her as much as I miss him and always be grateful for the the time I spent with her. You should know that my mother said many times how thankful she was for Diane because she didn't have to worry about Mike anymore once they settled down together (and not just because Diane worried enough for both of them!) She and Mike shared a genuine love and it was obvious to all who knew them. I am comforted in my belief that they are now together forever.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Fanning family. Diane was a wonderful lady that always took the time for others. Her and Mike were always wonderful to my mom and for that we will be forever grateful. It saddens us to hear of her passing at such a young age. May she Rest In Peace and may her joyous reunion with Mike be of some comfort.

We are very sorry to hear that Diane passed. Losing Mike was tough and she deserved to catch a few good breaks -‘particularly a lot of years with friends and family. She was great to work with - a little dry humor and could be a little grumpy, but underneath there was a huge heart and a lot of talent. Condolences to all -a tough way to spend the holidays in a year when things were pretty tough already.
